Campfire Gallery is pleased to present Detroit-based painter and graffiti artist Hello Melo in his first West Coast exhibition. The show will feature new acrylic paintings on wood and found signage. In addition to the artist reception on Saturday, August 17th, Melo will also do a live mural in the afternoon starting at 12 p.m.Hello Melo applies the same energy and love of risk to his paintings as his graffiti art. His series of untitled portraits are raw and expressive, capturing restless moments of acting out and defiance. They are both playful and disturbing, reveling in the release of daylight’s propriety. Choosing images from magazines and random sources, Melo applies a realistic approach to his subjects, which are rendered in translucent layers against graphic backgrounds. The results convey an underlying vulnerability that is both haunting and seductive.

Defining myself as an artist and what I create is connected to the “rogue” and “risky” behaviors I feel destined to be a part of. As a child, I was captivated by the colorful graffiti and allure of the unknown. I desired to claim Detroit with skill and precision, changing styles, materials, and always pushing my art to the next level. I enjoy portraying characters with a deep sense of reality, conflicted with a free flowing, heavily contrasted, intense, and colorful vibe that every person can connect to. Many people talk about life and struggles that happen in the ordinary every day goings on. I try to emulate my feelings concerning society and norms, my world, the connections we have with our man-made world versus the natural world and how we imprint ourselves in it. “You make your own mark on society; let it be your best.”
